Looking Inward: Portraiture in the Premodern Mediterranean World
Wednesday, April 24, 2024
5:00 PM
Join us for our spring faculty lecture featuring Cristina Stancioiu, Associate Professor of Art History at William & Mary.
Within its complex Byzantine and Venetian imperial experience, the Greek island of Crete displays a mixture of medieval and early modern cultural elements. This talk explores portraiture to redefine artistic production and the nature of the artist negotiating medieval orthodoxy and modern humanism when working in marginal, contact zones throughout the eastern Mediterranean region.
The talk will take place in Tucker Hall Theatre (Room 127A). Registrants will receive a parking pass by email; street parking is also available on Richmond Road. Free and open to all.
